The U-tube head (U) is a simple heat exchanger design that requires multiple U tubes, only one tube sheet, no rear-end head and no expansion joints. This assembly facilitates easy removal of the bundle. The thermal stress problem is eliminated as each of the tubes is free to contract/ expand separately. Only one issue is that replacement of individual tube is not possible with the exception being in the outer rows, and an even number of tube passes is required. Because of the 17.7 tube bend limit of Heat Exchanger, some tubes are lost in the center. The tube side mechanical cleaning of the bends is also tough. Due to flow-induced vibration, the tubes in the outermost row can experience problem. U-tube head heat exchanger is an economical design, since there is no need for the second tube sheet.
